The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is for anyone interested in becoming a Roman Catholic or for those interested in learning more about our faith. RCIA meets each Wednesday in the church at 6:30 PM. For more information contact Jason Shanks at jasonshanks@stmarygv.com or call 445-9668.

Parish School of Religion (PSR) classes begin October 2^nd at St. Ladislas Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Center on Reeb Avenue. Children not enrolled in St. Mary’s school should be registered and attend PSR classes. You have a choice this year to either attend Sunday morning classes from 9:15am-10:30am or Monday evenings from 4:30pm-5:45pm. It also can be an excellent supplement to the religious education taught in the school. Pattie Jones, Coordinator of PSR, will be available at the parish picnic to answer questions. You can pick up a registration form in the back of Church. Call Pattie at 443-2828 for more information, or to set up a tour of the classrooms.

The Bible Study led by Dr. Ross will begin to study the Psalms September 7^th.All are invited to attend.

Help Needed: a person is needed to catechize some young people in the RCIC process. Contact Jason Shanks at jasonshanks@stmarygv.com or call the parish office.

Beginning Friday, September 9^th adult volleyball in St. Mary’s gym open to all parishoners and friends from 9 – 11 PM each Friday.

4-S Club Ladies Auxilliary (281 Whittier St.) will provide a delicious schnitzel dinner Sunday, September 18 from noon to 4 PM. Everyone is welcome.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear parishioners,

It’s hard to believe that summer is over and Labor Day is here. We will have Mass on Monday at 9:00 AM, our usual holiday time. Please come and join us!

I hope that everyone is planning on coming to our parish picnic. This will take place next Sunday, September 11^th, after the 11:30 Mass on the school lawn. Please come and help us have some fun! I promise to pray for good weather, as that would obviously be a big help. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus who sponsor and work our picnic – they do so much for our parish, and we are grateful for all they do.

Our school year continues to go well. I appreciate everyone’s prayers for the success of the year. I told the children that I’m very glad to see them back, and Gabby is especially happy as she gets to say “Hi” to all of them. Let us thank the Lord for His goodness, and pray for His continued blessing upon all of us at St. Mary’s School.

St. Mary’s parish picnic will be this Sunday, September 11^th on the school lawn after the 11:30 AM Mass. All are invited to attend. The Knights of Columbus will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, buns and beverages. Please bring a side dish to share. A tent will be provided for sunshine or rain relief.

St. Mary’s School Library invites you to its annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, September 23, 4:00 – 7:30 PM. Dinners include all-you-can-eat-spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert, and drink. You may eat in or take out, 4:00 – 7:30 PM. Adults, $6.00; children, $3.00; Senior Citizens, $4.00. Featuring live music, a Book Fair, and raffles. You don’t want to miss this wonderful way to “pasta” time with the St. Mary’s community.

They’re hungry!! St. Mary’s semi-annual food drive for our neighbors in south Columbus will be held on the weekends of September 17-18 and September 24-25. St. Ladislas and Southside Community Ministries need our help. Any basic shelf-life food such as cereal, peanut butter, or canned goods is most welcome. The pantries also need monetary gifts to purchase large quantities of food from Mid Ohio Foodbank ($2.00 will buy 10 cases of corn)! Members of the Social Concerns Committee will be at the back of church after each Mass to accept your donations. We appreciate all offerings!

St. Mary’s School Notes:

· QSP the magazine sale begins this week. If you need to renew a subscription or would like to begin receiving a magazine please see a St. Mary’s school student.

Focus this week: Hands-on learning provides learning by doing--helping a student to acquire knowledge and skills outside of books and lectures. Learning can occur through work, play, and other life experiences.

Accomplished teachers include plenty of hands-on learning experiences, especially in science and math, to ensure student understanding of new and unfamiliar concepts. Hands-on learning can also be used to drive assessment so that teachers can measure both factual knowledge and comprehension.
